Is God among us, a walk through Exodus 17

Historical and literary context

Exodus 17:1-2 Who leads the people at Rephidim after they left Egypt, the Lord who delivered them, or another voice?

The people have left Egypt and are now at Rephidim in the South Peninsula. They have come out of slavery by God’s delivering power, with Moses as their leader, yet they still ask if the Lord is among them.

The trial and the rock

See, I stand before you there on the rock. You shall strike the rock and water will come out for the people to drink. They named that place Massah and Meribah because of Israel’s testing of the Lord, as they asked, Is the Lord among us or not?

Is the Lord among us, or not? The New Testament speaks of the rock that followed Israel as Christ, a link that helps us see Exodus 17 in relation to Jesus. It reminds us that God’s presence with His people is visible even in moments of test and drought. Jesus was the rock, He was struck and received the staff of judgement so that the people could have water, the water of life, eternal life through His death on the cross.

The battle with Amalek

God’s presence is seen as the people fight with reliance on Him and Moses’ role in keeping his hands up.

Remembrance and conclusion

God proves presence twice and the question is answered with a yes, reminding readers of His ongoing faithfulness.

Original meaning and significance

The wilderness is not absence but a place where God reveals himself through power and promise.

Contemporary significance

Christ remains the rock that accompanies his people and his Spirit dwells in believers.

The walk ends. The word does not.
