Not a shepherd. My shepherd. Syd begins here, because everything that follows depends on the word 'my'.
He maketh me to in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the .
Sheep will not lie down while they are afraid. Rest is not something you achieve. It is something a shepherd provides.
He : he leadeth me in the for his name's sake.
A cast sheep, flat on its back, cannot right itself. The shepherd walks over and sets it on its feet. That is the word 'restore'.
Yea, though I walk through the , I will : for ; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Notice the psalm change here. Until now David spoke about God. In the dark, he speaks to Him. 'He' becomes 'Thou'. The valley turns theology into prayer.
Thou preparest in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; .
Not a food parcel thrown over the wall. A table, laid slowly, in full view of everything that troubles you. God is not in a hurry, and He is not intimidated.
Surely all the days of my life: and I will for ever.
The psalm ends at home. Not 'I hope', but 'surely'. The sheep that began by wanting nothing ends by lacking nothing, for ever.
