A living lesson ยท Grade 10 Life Sciences

How a leaf eats light.

This is Tuesday's lesson, still here on Wednesday night when you sit down to study. Scroll slowly. The light changes as the lesson does. Touch any underlined word to look closer. Nothing you do here is recorded.

Begin the lesson
One. The question

A tree is mostly , not out of soil.

This sounds wrong the first time. Hold onto how strange it feels, because the whole lesson is the answer to it.

Two. The ingredients

Take and , and add the one thing food normally never contains: .

Three ingredients. Two you cannot see, one you cannot hold. Remember them; they are the left-hand side of the equation.

Three. The kitchen

Inside the leaf, hold the green pigment that .

Green is not the point of chlorophyll. Green is the light it throws away. What it keeps is the red and the blue, and that is the energy that does the work.

Four. The equation

Light turns air and water into , and breathes out the we live on.

This is the sentence to know cold: six carbon dioxide, plus six water, plus light energy, gives one glucose, plus six oxygen. Everything else on this page explains this one line.

Five. The exam

So: why does a plant kept in the dark ?

This is the kind of question the paper asks. Not 'list the ingredients' but 'take one away and tell me what happens'. If you can answer this, you understand the lesson, not just the words.

The lesson ends. Studying begins.

Watch the whole lesson as it was taught, then take one study step with you into the week.

Where are you with this topic?

Choose one, and the lesson will meet you there. Your notes stay on your device; only an anonymous count of where the class is reaches your teacher.

Send it to myself on WhatsApp

Copied. Put it where you will see it when you open your books.

Still stuck on something?

If a part of this will not come loose, that is useful information, not a failure. Send it to the teacher; questions like yours often become the start of the next lesson. Nothing here does your homework for you, on purpose.
